Training Our Future Medical Professionals

Lakeland Primary Care, Longmeadow in Niles is the host practice for Spectrum Health Lakeland's Osteopathic Family Medicine Residency program, and Lakeland Primary Care, Royalton in St. Joseph is the host location for Lakeland Health’s Osteopathic Internal Medicine Residency program.

What is a Resident?

A resident is a newly-minted physician. They are medical school graduates who are training in their area of specialty. Each resident will spend three to five years training in both the clinical and classroom setting here at Lakeland.

Resident physicians are doctors who are completing their medical training in a chosen specialty. They are responsible for direct patient care while working in collaboration with an attending physician. These additional physicians give us the medical knowledge and coverage to offer you same-day appointments.

Attracting and Retaining Top Talent

There are several benefits to having a residency program. At Lakeland, it’s our goal to attract and retain the best talent to the community. Our residency program will help us do just that.

“Physicians often choose to work in the same area where they completed their residencies,” said Lowell Hamel, MD Lakeland’s Vice President of Medical Affairs and Chief Medical Officer. “The amenities our community has to offer, in addition to the technology and resources available at Lakeland, make for a very strong case for remaining in southwest Michigan to practice.”

Lakeland continues to welcome new residents every year. Candidates for those positions are selected and interviewed during the summer and fall.
