Long Term Care Services
Lakeland HealthCare has two skilled nursing facilities in Southwest Michigan dedicated exclusively to senior care.
Lakeland Long Term Acute Care Hospital in Berrien Center is a 166-bed facility nestled among the famed orchards and vineyards of Southwest Michigan . Located on a hilltop minutes away from Lake Chapin , the hospital has a scenic environment that enhances quality clinical care. It is the only hospital-based skilled nursing facility in a 10-county region offering traditional care and unique services for residents with multiple health care needs. The center is a 166-bed facility that is specially designed for patients to relearn living skills. Beechwood House, a 24-bed specialty unit for those suffering from Alzheimer, like dementia is a part of this care center. The care team at Beechwood House includes, physicians, licensed nurses, certified nurse assistants, a registered medical social worker, and a dietitian, as well as other professionals. The center accepts Medicare and Medicaid patients.

Lakeland Continuing Care Center in St. Joseph offers sweeping Lake Michigan views from its garden. Residents and visitors often gather in the garden for events and activities, which gives this facility a unique sense of community, along with excellent care.
Both facilities offer an experience for patients unlike any nursing home in Michigan . They are one of a select few facilities in the state certified in the Eden Alternative , a unique approach to senior care. The Eden philosophy encourages seniors to live life to the fullest through plants, animals, and contact with children. When you visit our facilities, you’ll notice the difference from typical nursing homes immediately. Most importantly, you will see seniors in a setting that feels like home.
Elders are encouraged to make decisions about the daily activities that they enjoy best here, whether it means caring for pets, interacting with visitors and other residents, or simply taking time for reflection in the garden.
Lakeland also offers opportunities that give the facilities a unique sense of community. Residents look forward to outings to concerts, festivals, and other attractions. Throughout the year, seniors give back to the area through fundraising projects. Family members of residents are an important part of the community, too. We recognize the role of family in the recovery, and encourage family members to be part of special events at the facilities.

Rehabilitative Services
Lakeland HealthCare offers a full range of rehabilitative services for seniors, including physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech therapy. These services assist residents to maximize their level of function
Pulmonary/Ventilator Weaning Program
When a patient is properly managed, a respiratory care exercise program can be an effective addition to the rehabilitation process. All patients are evaluated by the care team in order to tailor the respiratory rehabilitation care plan to their needs.
There are a number of diagnoses that can utilize such rehabilitation, including:
- Heart failure
- Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
- Respiratory infection
- Pulmonary disease
Wound Care Management
Lakeland Specialty Hospital takes a holistic approach to meeting the special needs of wound care patients. Our certified wound care staff offer services such as interdisciplinary rehabilitative care, continuous nutrition assessment, and medical and technological treatment.
Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy
A new addition to Lakeland Specialty Hospital , hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) is a method of treating conditions by administering pure oxygen in an enclosed system. When utilized as a medical therapy, high doses of oxygen can help heal damaged organs, promote the healing of chronic wounds, and save lives in certain conditions.
Currently, 15 conditions are approved for reimbursement by insurance, including:
- Diabetic wounds
- Radiation tissue damage (osteoradionecrosis)
- Osteomyelitis (refractory)
- Skin grafts and flaps (compromised)
